Understanding prostate changes as you get older

What changes in the prostate can mean, and when it is worth speaking to a specialist.

4 min read

The prostate is a small gland that sits below the bladder. It commonly changes with age, and those changes are not always a sign of something serious.

Many men notice differences in their urinary stream, or find they are waking at night to pass urine. These symptoms are worth discussing, because there are several possible causes and they are managed differently.

A specialist assessment usually starts with a conversation about your symptoms and general health. Blood tests and imaging may be suggested, and your specialist should explain what each result means before anything else is decided.

If you are unsure whether your symptoms need attention, that itself is a good reason to ask. An assessment can be reassuring as often as it leads to treatment.
