What happens at a prostate assessment?

What a prostate assessment usually involves, from questions to PSA results.

The short answer: a prostate assessment usually combines a discussion of your urinary symptoms, a PSA blood test and, where appropriate, an examination — so the specialist can tell the difference between common age-related changes and something that needs closer attention.

You may be asked to complete a short symptom questionnaire about your stream, how often you go and whether you wake at night.

If results suggest more information is needed, imaging may be discussed. Your specialist should explain what each result means before any decision is made.

Caribbean men have a higher-than-average risk of prostate cancer, so an assessment is worth asking about even without symptoms. Your specialist will advise what is right for you.
